We were both trained as apprentices on a number of organic farms in the Northeast. We have experienced the rewards that a hands-on, “labor for learning” exchange can provide, and we feel committed to this model. We enjoy our roles as mentors and teachers, as we continue to develop our own farm. We feel our apprenticeship can offer a very comprehensive training due to the scale and diversity of the farm, as well as our commitment to train future farmers. For us, farming is both a challenging and viable means to make a living, and we enjoy sharing that enthusiasm. We aim to share with apprentices all aspects of managing our farm. These skills include greenhouse propagation, seeding and cultivating field crops, hand tool and equipment maintenance and operation, harvest and handling of all crops, crop rotations and cover cropping, pastured livestock husbandry, record-keeping and organizational skills, general carpentry and construction, and marketing and business management skills. There is a lot to it! Our farm is also our homestead, and we involve apprentices in homestead tasks as well, such as orchard tree care, beekeeping, and food preservation and storage.
Generally, we aim to serve apprentices by helping them identify their goals and interests and keeping those in mind each and every day. We hope that apprentices can take with them a firm foundation in running an organic farm, and the confidence to take their own next steps in agriculture.
Prospective applicants should feel free to contact us for more information about our apprenticeship opportunity.
